Freedom from Violence

Get Help

API Legal Outreach has spent decades working to end cyclical violence against women, children, elders, and more recently, those who identify as gender/sexual minorities. Our approach is two fold, performing outreach and education to identify and discourage domestic violence while simultaneously supporting survivors of violence through comprehensive legal and social services.

Legal and Social Services

We provide legal and social services, as well as referrals in order to support and empower survivors in rebuilding their lives and living free from violence.

Violence Prevention

API Legal Outreach recognizes that to end cyclical violence, we must prevent violence from occurring while also serving survivors. We host outreach and education events to raise awareness and prevent violence in our communities.

“Every day, I feel so scared and so depressed.”

“How can I live like this? I worry he will get mad, yell at me, and hit me if I do something he don’t like”

Legal and Social Services

Since 1975, API Legal Outreach has prioritized the needs of survivors of domestic, intimate partner, and dating violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and stalking. Our practices are both survivor-centered and trauma-informed. We provide services in the following areas to survivors of violence in the client’s language of choice:

  • Obtaining protective orders and other emergency statutory remedies
  • Dissolution and child custody matters
  • Case Management
  • Filing for any and all appropriate immigration remedies, including VAWA created specifically for survivors of crime
  • Advocacy to protect rights as victim; filing for any and all state remedies created specifically for victims of crime, such as victim restitution
  • Preparation for interaction with law enforcement and criminal trials

“I’m so scared”

“me and my daughter, we have to hide the knives, scissors … anything that he could use to hurt us. I just pray. What if I die tonight?”

Violence Prevention – Outreach and Education

API Legal Outreach is dedicated to preventing domestic, family, and intimate partner violence. We conduct outreach to the public and for government and law enforcement agencies to define healthy relationships and provide insight on how to work with API and immigrant survivors of violence.

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) also works extensively to prevent violence in API youth communities by raising awareness and providing educational outreach at schools and youth events.

“My husband promised me he would stop hurting me once we got to America”

“I have no family, friends, or support here, and I have two children to raise. But within a few months of moving here, he beat me like I wasn’t even human. The police were eventually called by someone else, and they referred me to API Legal Outreach. They helped me get custody of my children, which is the most important thing to me, and I’m so thankful for that.”

Partnering to End Violence

Since its founding, API Legal Outreach has recognized the need for holistic, culturally and linguistically competent service available to survivors. To address this need we have partnered with groups such as the Domestic Violence Consortium, Asian Women’s Shelter, Mujeres Unidas y Activas, Ruby’s Place, and Banteay Srei. By collaborating with these groups, API Legal Outreach is able to ensure that survivors not only have access to quality legal and case management services, but also to housing, transportation, and mental health assistance.
