Protecting Our Elderly Folks: Shedding Light on Elder Abuse

As we celebrate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, 2023, it is crucial to bring attention to the often hidden and heartbreaking issue of elder abuse. Our senior citizens, who have contributed so much to our society, deserve our protection and support. In this article, we will explore what elder abuse entails, the various forms it can take, common scams that target seniors, and how we can assist those who have fallen victim to this pervasive problem.

What is Elder Abuse?

Elder abuse refers to any intentional or negligent act that causes harm or distress to an older person. It can occur within a relationship of trust, such as family members, caregivers, or professionals responsible for their well-being. Elder abuse can manifest in various forms, including physical, emotional, financial, sexual, and neglect.

Forms of Elder Abuse:

1.  Physical Abuse: This involves the use of force, resulting in physical pain, injury, or impairment. It may include hitting, pushing, restraining, or inappropriate administration of medication.

2.  Emotional Abuse: Emotional abuse inflicts mental anguish or distress through intimidation, humiliation, ridicule, or isolation. It can involve verbal threats, constant criticism, or withholding affection.

3.  Financial Abuse: Financial exploitation targets the elderly person’s assets, property, or funds without their informed consent or for the abuser’s personal gain. Common examples include fraud, forgery, identity theft, and coercing or deceiving seniors into signing legal documents.

4.  Sexual Abuse: This encompasses any non-consensual sexual activity imposed on an older adult, often involving physical force, threats, or exploitation.

 5.  Neglect: Neglect occurs when caregivers fail to fulfill their responsibilities and provide necessary care, leading to harm or endangerment of the elderly person’s health or safety. Neglect can include withholding essential medical treatment, basic hygiene, food, or shelter.

Common Scams Targeting Seniors

Sadly, older adults are often targeted by scammers who prey on their vulnerabilities. Some common scams include:

1.  Medicare and Health Insurance Fraud: Scammers may pose as healthcare providers, offering free services or medical equipment in exchange for personal information or Medicare details.

2.  Grandparent Scam: Fraudsters impersonate grandchildren in distress, urgently requesting money to cover unexpected expenses or legal troubles.

3.  Telemarketing and Phone Scams: Seniors may receive calls promising prizes, investments, or services that require immediate payment or disclosure of personal information.

4.  Sweepstakes and Lottery Scams: Fraudsters inform victims they have won a lottery or sweepstakes but need to pay taxes or fees to claim the prize.

5.  Home Improvement and Repair Scams: Unscrupulous contractors may exploit seniors by offering unnecessary repairs, charging exorbitant fees, or performing subpar work.

How to Help Seniors Who Are Victims of Elder Abuse:

1.  Recognize the Signs: Be aware of potential signs of elder abuse, including unexplained injuries, sudden changes in behavior, withdrawal from social activities, financial irregularities, or inadequate living conditions.

2.  Encourage Open Communication: Maintain regular contact with seniors, fostering an environment where they feel comfortable discussing any concerns or difficulties they may be experiencing.

3.  Report Suspected Abuse: If you suspect elder abuse, contact your local adult protective services, law enforcement, or a trusted elder law attorney to report the situation and seek appropriate intervention.

4.  Supportive Resources: Familiarize yourself with local organizations and resources dedicated to protecting seniors, such as adult protective services, helplines, or support groups. Share this information with seniors to ensure they know where to seek assistance if needed.

5.  Legal Assistance: Consult an experienced elder law attorney who can provide guidance on protective measures. The Elder/YAD team may be able to provide some assistance to seniors who were victimized by elder abuse
